چکیده

Introduction Ultrasound measurement of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) has been utilized as an indirect assessment of intracranial pressure (ICP). Currently, the normal ONSD is believed to be < 5 mm, whereas diameters above 6 mm are considered to reflect a clinically significant increase in ICP. Despite these standard values, the ONSD has never been compared with simultaneously measured ICP values in awake, spontaneously breathing patients.

Asymmetric optic nerve sheath diameter as an outcome factor following cranioplasty in patients harboring the 'syndrome of the trephined'.

UNLABELLED Decompressive craniectomy (DC) is gaining an increasing role in the neurosurgical treatment of intractable intracranial hypertension, but not without complications. A rare complication is the "syndrome of the trephined" (ST). It occurs when the forces of gravity overwhelm intracranial pressures, leading the brain to become sunken. OBJECTIVE To determine the usefulness of asymmetric...

Optic Nerve Sheath Diameter Ultrasound Evaluation in Intensive Care Unit: Possible Role and Clinical Aspects in Neurological Critical Patients' Daily Monitoring

Background. The increase of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) is a reliable, noninvasive sonographic marker of intracranial hypertension. Aim of the study was to demonstrate the efficacy of ONSD evaluation, when monitoring neurocritical patients, to early identify malignant intracranial hypertension in patients with brain death (BD). Methods. Data from ultrasound ONSD evaluation have been ...

Dynamic optic nerve sheath diameter responses to short-term hyperventilation measured with sonography in patients under general anesthesia

BACKGROUND Rapid evaluation and management of intracranial pressure (ICP) can help to early detection of increased ICP and improve postoperative outcomes in neurocritically-ill patients. Sonographic measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) is a non-invasive method of evaluating increased intracranial pressure at the bedside. In the present study, we hypothesized that sonographic ONSD, ...

Ultrasound measurement of optic nerve diameter and optic nerve sheath diameter in healthy Chinese adults

BACKGROUND Measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) is a fast and non-invasive method in detecting elevated intracranial pressure. However, the reported normal range of ONSD was inconsistent. The objective of the study was to determine the normal range of ONSD in healthy Chinese adults. METHODS Eyeball transverse diameter (ETD), optic nerve diameter (OND), and ONSD were measured by u...

Changes in intraocular pressure and optic nerve sheath diameter in patients undergoing robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy in steep 45° Trendelenburg position

BACKGROUND To evaluate changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) and intracerebral pressure (ICP) reflected by the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) in patients undergoing robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) in permanent 45° steep Trendelenburg position (STP). METHODS Fifty-one patients undergoing RALP under a standardised anaesthesia. IOP was perioperatively measured in awake pat...
